Use this normal prelim template for your assessment of an ultrasound of the abdomen. Remember that the radiologist report will be more comprehensive and include more definitive statements based on their expertise.
Normal gallbladder. No gallstones, no wall thickening, no pericholecystic fluid.
No intrahepatic or extrahepatic biliary ductal dilation.
No hydronephrosis.
No abdominal aortic aneurysm.
No ascites.
Reporting Abnormal Findings
When you see an abnormality, these phrases are helpful to express the finding in standard language.
Structure | Abnormal Phrases to Know |

Gallbladder | Gallstones present. Gallstones present with [gallbladder wall thickening], [pericholecystic fluid], [hyperemia], and [positive Sonographic Murphy sign], all concerning for acute cholecystitis. Gallbladder wall thickening without gallstones. Pericholecystic fluid present. |
Common Bile Duct | Common bile duct dilated, measuring [X mm]. |
Liver | Hepatic steatosis present. Focal hepatic lesion identified. Further evaluation recommended with liver protocol CT or MRI. Intrahepatic biliary ductal dilation present. |
Pancreas | Pancreatic mass or fullness identified. Further evaluation recommended with pancreatic protocol CT or MRI. Peripancreatic fluid present. |
Spleen | Splenomegaly. |
Kidneys | Hydronephrosis present on [right/left]. Renal mass on [right/left]. Further evaluation recommended with renal protocol CT or MRI. |
